Almuñecar

The Moorish castle of San Miguel, with its three archways and impressive towers, is the decor of the old town. Narrow streets, colorful shops and small restaurants add to the authentic Spanish flavor in this historic quarter. The boulevard has a more modern architecture, with a lively beach scene. With 28.000 inhabitants Almuñecar is the center of the Costa Tropical and very popular by locals.

Sunny beaches

Crystal clear water, 320 sunny days per year. What more do you want? Almuñecar has the prettiest beaches of Spain with over 10 beautiful beaches to choose from. Some sandy, some with pebbles, but all of them breathtakingly gorgeous... Most of Almuñécar's beaches are designated as "Family Beaches", meaning they are perfect for the whole family and a good choice for bringing the kids along. All have showers and lifeguards. Playa Cabria is well-known as a popular water sports beach perfect for snorkeling, SUP or surf. You will find all the information you need about the Almuñécar beaches here... Remember to pack your sunscreen!!

Restaurants

Almuñecar is culinary heaven. Real Andalusian dishes can be found at the chiringuitos at the beach, or more upmarket in town. All at walking distance from our houses. Enjoy the local wine from the cooler slopes of Sierra Nevada. The prices are very friendly and so is the staff. Imagine…. zipping your sangria, bare feet in the sand, looking at the sunset while dolphins are passing the bay. That is Almunecar. That is Spain at its best.

Culture

Andalucía has seven World Heritage sites, all of which are worth a visit. Granada is our favorite day trip for a shot of culture and history. A visit to the Alhambra, the Generalife and Albaicín will take you back to the Moorish times, when architecture peaked with impressive castles and mosques. For more recent art you head to Málaga, where Museo Picasso celebrates this Malaga-born artist. But, do not forget Sevilla, with its world-famous Cathedral de Sevilla, Cordoba with its La Mezquita or the world-famous bridge of Ronda.

Nature

The mountains that surround Almuñecar offer extensive trails for hiking, running and mountain-biking in a spectacular nature. Overlooking the snowy Sierra Nevada peaks on one side and the blue Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Do you want more adventure? Try canyoning in cool crystal-clear streams or drive to Sierra Nevada National Park, where you find 16 peaks above 3000 meters. Don’t be surprised if you come eye-to-eye with some Spanish ibex or a wild boar. Beautiful walks. It is Alpine terrain. Snowfall often stops you from reaching the peaks in spring or autumn.

For active souls

There are plenty of possibilities to stay active in the water. Almuñecar has a diving-school, sup-board rental and sailboat rental. A perfect windy kite-surf beach is only a 15 minutes’ drive away, in Motril where you can also find good surf all year round and a reef break a bit further.
In winter you can explore the 100 km of fabulous snowy pistes at the Sierra Nevada in the morning and then take a dip in the warm Mediterranean in the sunny afternoon.
